Indigenous Community in Capas Trained on Sustainable Farming Techniques
Capas, Tarlac — This week, members of the indigenous community in Sitio Binyayan participated in a sustainable farming training held at the Ayta Ethno Botanical Center (AEBC). The program is part of an ongoing effort by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) to empower indigenous populations through environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
Implemented jointly with the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office III (DA-RFO 3) and Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU), the training covered a range of subjects designed to promote eco-conscious crop management. One of the key topics was Integrated Pest Management, which was taught using a scientific, sustainable approach to minimize chemical use and encourage healthier crop yields.
PSAU’s College of Agriculture Dean, Dr. Rafael Rafael, emphasized the importance of utilizing forest resources and adopting organic farming techniques as alternatives to synthetic inputs. "We encourage farmers to embrace earth-friendly methods that sustain both their livelihoods and the environment," he stated.
Participants also explored plans to develop an irrigation system capable of supporting agricultural production beyond the rainy season, aiming to increase farm productivity year-round.
The event brought together representatives from BCDA, led by Community Relations Head Jennifer Mallo, along with Project Manager and UP Professor F. Charito Sebastian, PSAU experts including Dr. Rafael, and Engr. Ronel Santos from DA-RFO 3, besides other faculty and staff.
This initiative reflects broader national efforts to combine indigenous wisdom with technological solutions to combat pressing challenges like climate change and soil degradation. By promoting methods such as agroforestry, organic farming, and precision agriculture, the government and supporting organizations strive to enhance food security, improve farmer incomes, and build resilience against environmental threats in the Philippines.
