Globe Telecom Advances Satellite Technology to Expand Mobile Coverage in Remote Areas

Globe Telecom has taken a significant step toward bridging connectivity gaps in the Philippines by completing the country’s inaugural voice call made directly to a mobile phone via a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite. Conducted in the Bagac municipality of Bataan—an area lacking terrestrial network infrastructure—the trial demonstrated reliable voice communication even under adverse weather conditions, delivering clear and stable audio quality. The telecommunications company collaborated with Lynk Global, a specialist in direct-to-device satellite connectivity, which operates a constellation of LEO “space cell towers.” This partnership aims to extend mobile service coverage to regions that are typically difficult to reach due to geographical and infrastructural challenges. Gerhard Tan, Globe’s Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations, highlighted the trial’s potential impact: "Globe revolutionizes connectivity by bringing nextwave solutions to the remotest areas. This initiative will bridge the digital gap while supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by providing innovative direct-to-device service in the hands of every Filipino." Daniel Dooley, Chief Commercial Officer of Lynk Global, emphasized the effort to connect rural communities, remote islands, and maritime zones that currently lack service. "We will ensure that the broader Filipino population has connectivity in times of need when terrestrial networks are down," he stated. Furthering this technological advancement, satellite telecommunications provider SES has indicated ongoing discussions with Philippine telecom operators to deploy 4G and 5G networks supported by satellite direct-to-device capabilities. This approach allows operators to bypass traditional investments in ground infrastructure such as cell towers and base stations by leveraging satellite technology to maintain communication with consumers’ mobile devices directly. Globe Telecom’s successful trial marks a pivotal moment in expanding reliable mobile communications to underserved areas, potentially enhancing disaster response and everyday connectivity throughout the archipelago.
