CLMMRH Designates Specialized Wards amid Rising Leptospirosis Cases in Negros Occidental
The Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) in Bacolod City has responded to a significant increase in leptospirosis cases by establishing specialized wards for both adult and pediatric patients affected by the bacterial infection. This development comes following a rise in moderate to severe leptospirosis referrals, mainly from southern parts of Negros Occidental.
In a public advisory issued Saturday, hospital officials emphasized the prioritization of severe leptospirosis cases to guarantee timely and appropriate medical care. As of Sunday, CLMMRH had admitted eight leptospirosis patients, a marked increase from the usual zero to two cases the facility typically handles monthly.
Though specific patient origins were not disclosed, the spike in cases is linked to recent flash floods caused by Typhoon Tino on November 4, which impacted several cities and municipalities in central and southern Negros.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by leptospira spirochetes, transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals, commonly rats. Infection often occurs via cuts, wounds, or other breaches in the skin.
Health authorities advise individuals who have been exposed to potentially contaminated water, soil, or food to seek prophylactic treatment promptly or consult healthcare providers immediately for appropriate medication.
The hospital has urged referring facilities to coordinate effectively with its operations center, following established protocols for patient referral and transfer.
"As the apex hospital of the Negros Island Region, CLMMRH remains committed to delivering compassionate and high-quality care, especially during surge periods," the hospital management stated. They also requested continued cooperation from both medical facilities and the public to manage bed availability and ensure efficient treatment of all patients affected by leptospirosis.
